Course Description:

This course will cover several terms including, soft tissue mobilization, friction massage, myofascial, and flossing that have been used under the umbrella of myofascial release. The lecture portion of this course will cover both histology and common musculoskeletal pathologies and how these abnormalities of the myofascial system are affected including the peripheral nervous system. The presenter will also offer anatomical and physiological reasoning supporting various soft tissue techniques. The majority of this class will focus on lab education and practice for multiple techniques designed to improve mobility and decrease pain in a variety of patients presenting with acute, chronic, or post-op impairments. These techniques include myofascial release, positional release, and nerve flossing.

Topics:

Myofascial Release and Soft Tissue Healing
Posture and Palpation
Myofascial Release for the Spine
Myofascial Release for the Extremities
Neural Tension and Flossing
Strain – Counterstrain

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
Demonstrate understanding of the anatomic rationale behind various soft tissue techniques including myofascial release, positional release, and nerve flossing.
Indentify possible causes of restrictions in the myofascial and peripheral nervous system.
Demonstrate understanding of the primary goals of various soft tissue techniques including myofascial release, positional release, and nerve flossing
Demonstrate proficiency in the application of various soft tissue techniques including myofascial release, positional release, and nerve flossing.
Discuss the various myofascial systems of the human body and how each is influenced by injury and intervention.
Contrast the various labels that are used to describe various soft tissue techniques including myofascial release, positional release, and nerve flossing.
Distinguish the phases of soft tissue healing so as to employ safe and appropriate soft tissue manipulation techniques for a variety of patients with musculoskeletal impairments commonly seen in
