Course Description:

People who experience mild to severe head injuries require a comprehensive team approach to rehabilitation. This course will provide differential diagnosis, examination and rehabilitation of people across the lifespan with all types of brain injury, from mild concussion to severe head injury, in a variety of practice settings. This course is an interactive, case-based and laboratory course designed to integrate current evidence with practical approach to rehabilitation, acute and long-term care.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion the participant will be able to demonstrate and have an understanding of:
Perform differential diagnosis of persons with brain injury (BI)
Become familiar with the epidemiology, etiology & pathophysiology of persons with BI
Identify primary and secondary clinical signs & symptoms [I.e. seizures, hydrocephalus, headaches, brain herniation, neurological changes]
Identify potential system changes in persons with BI [I.e. Sensory, visual, perceptual, vestibular, motor, cognitive, emotional, behavioral, and communication]
Perform examination, evaluation, prognosis, diagnosis, realistic functional goal setting, intervention and predict outcomes
Design and perform simulated treatment management approaches that enhance overall functioning of persons with BI I.e. early positioning, coma stimulation, mobilization, facilitation/inhibition, inhibitive footplates and casting, gymnastic ball activities, developmental activities, vestibular rehabilitation, functional balance and locomotor training
Engage in critical thinking for a team approach to rehabilitation in case-based studies of various people with BI

Presenter: Ann Newstead, PT, DPT, PhD, NCS, GCS, CEEAA

Dr, Newstead is a graduate of State University College at Potsdam, New York with BA degree in 1976, University  of Alabama with MS and PT degree in 1978 and University of Texas with PhD degree in Kinesiology/Movement Science in 2010. Ann has worked in rehabilitation inpatient, outpatient and home health settings. She has worked in faculty positions at the University of Texas Medical Branch Galveston from 1992-1996; The University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio from 1997-2010; University of Incarnate Word San Antonio from 2010-2012 and West Coast University from 2012-to 2016. Ann currently owns her own physical therapy clinic AhNew Physical Therapy. Ann received her Geriatric Clinical Specialization from 2005-present; Neurological Clinical Specialization from 1994-present; Vestibular Rehabilitation Certification in 2008 and APTA Certified Exercise Expert in Aging Adults in 2011. Ann has published research in the area of balance, older adults and brain injury. Dr. Newstead is an active member of the American Physical Therapy Association.
