Presenter: Jacob Thorp, PT, DHS, OCS, MTC
Price: $130.00
Number of Contact Hours/CCU’s:  15
Target Audience: PT’s, PTA’s, OT’s, OTA’s
Included: One Link to Access the Entire Set of Videos, A Course Manual (e-mailed), Sign-in Sheet, Evaluation and Summary Sheet

Course Description:

This course will use sensitivity, specificity, and likelihood ratios to present an evidenced based, and clinically relevant, approach to completing a lower quarter (lower thoracic and ribs, lumbar spine, and SIJ region) assessment. The lecture and lab series includes a detailed presentation of the functional anatomy of the thoracic and lumbar spine and SIJ region arthrokinematics, biomechanics, and muscle function. Common lower quarter pathologies will also be covered as they pertain to etiology, patient history, and differential diagnosis. Current literature will be incorporated to determine if the patient’s pain is a result of a musculoskeletal dysfunction or another body system or pathology. Finally, the participants will learn and practice, various manual therapy interventions as they pertain to the pathologies discussed in class. The manual therapy interventions, taught in this course, include mobilizations, high velocity thrust, myofascial release, and nerve glides

Topics:

Anatomy & Kinematics of Thoracic-Lumbar Spine & SIJ
Lower Quarter Pathologies & Differential Diagnosis
Evidenced-Based Lower Screen and Examination
Evidenced-Based Lower Screen and Examination
Mobilization Techniques, Thrusting Techniques and Muscle Energy of the Lower Quarter
Lower Extremity Nerve Glides and Myofascial Release of Lower Quarter

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

Detail normal anatomical structures and arthrokinematics, of the T5 through S1 region, that occur with flexion, extension, sidebending, and rotation.
Describe the arthrokinematics associated with sacroiliac and iliosacral movement.
List common differential diagnoses for musculoskeletal disorders in the thoracic and lumbar spine, ribs, and SIJ regions.
Thoroughly investigate a patient’s history in order to fully understand the link between subjective and objectives measures in an individual patient.
Identify impairments, functional limitations, and disabilities in patients with lower quarter musculoskeletal pathologies
Utilizing research-based evidence, discuss how to properly utilize special tests in the discrimination of lower quarter musculoskeletal lesions.
Demonstrate proficiency in the application of myofascial release and nerve flossing in the lower quarter.
Utilizing research-based evidence, demonstrate a physical/occupational therapy examination for patients with lower thoracic, rib, lumbar, or SIJ impairments.
Perform an examination to differentiate between lumbar and SIJ involvement.
Demonstrate graded mobilization techniques to increase ROM and/or modulate pain in the lower thoracic, rib, lumbar, and SIJ regions.
Demonstrate a variety of high velocity thrust techniques to increase ROM in the lower thoracic, rib, lumbar, and SIJ regions.
