Course Description:

This course is designed to educate the participant about the anatomy, biomechanics, and functions of the pelvic floor and to introduce the musculoskeletal implications that pelvic floor dysfunctions have on other orthopedic conditions such as low back pain, SIJD, sciatica, and hip pain. Emphasis will be placed on appropriate external interventions that can be provided in an outpatient orthopedic clinic and when referral to a pelvic floor specialist is suggested. There will be lab offered in this class so the participant should wear proper attire such as yoga pants or lose shorts. Jeans and khaki pants will not be conducive to this lab.

Participants will identify important anatomical structures of the pelvic floor and recognize the importance of considering the pelvic floor when treating other orthopedic conditions such as low back, SI, and hip dysfunctions.

Participants will demonstrate the ability to externally facilitate a proper pelvic floor contraction and educate their patients on the necessary home exercise programs to improve pelvic floor dysfunctions.

Participants will demonstrate the ability to perform external manual trigger point release to the obturator internus and levator ani muscle groups to supplement other interventions for the treatment of sciatica and SIJD.

Jennifer is a Kansas Licensed Doctor of Physical Therapy with 15 years of experience and is a Board Certified Women’s Health Specialist through the American Physical Therapy Association’s Board of Physical Therapy Specialties. Currently Jennifer owns Essential Core Physical Therapy, Inc. and also works as the Director of Clinical Education and an instructor for the Department of Physical Therapy at Wichita State University teaching Professional Practice coursework and Women’s Health/pelvic floor Physical Therapy. Jennifer is dedicated to treating women and men for urologic, colorectal, and pelvic pain conditions as well as women for pregnancy related musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction.
She earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Health Service, Organization, and Policy in 1999 followed by a Master’s Degree in Physical Therapy in 2001 from Wichita State University. Jennifer completed her Doctor of Physical Therapy Degree from Northeastern University in Boston, MA in 2009.
