Course Description:

This course focuses on a comprehensive problem solving approach to diagnosing and treating dizziness and balance disorders through a case study approach. It provides a review of functional anatomy and physiology of the balance systems with a closer look at identifying peripheral and central pathway pathologies. The course also places an emphasis on utilization of subjective and objective findings to formulate a working diagnosis and the most appropriate intervention, including identification of further evaluation and/or need for further referral. The material is presented in a manner to support evidence based medicine and introduce basic concepts of statistical elements in the diagnostic process. The participant will also be introduced to a variety of diagnoses (both central and peripheral), including recommended medical and therapy interventions for optimal outcomes. The course format will be lecture and lab integrated into a case study approach in an effort to apply into daily practice.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion the participant will be able to demonstrate and have an understanding of:
Explain in lay terms the functional anatomy and physiology of the balance systems with more in depth understanding of the peripheral and central vestibular systems.
Recognize the process and criteria for identifying a disease or condition through symptoms, diagnostic tests and lab studies
Recognize the trade-off between sensitivity and specificity as well as understand the principles of a good screening process to identify when to proceed with examination/evaluation or to make referral.
Perform a comprehensive history, systems review, and tests and measures to formulate an accurate working diagnosis.
Identify appropriate functional goals using both subjective and objective indicators and determine appropriate prognosis and plan of care according to identified diagnosis, including when further testing is warranted.
Implement treatment interventions for optimal outcomes using combined theoretical approaches, key indicators to monitor progress and identify if patient is responding appropriately to the intervention

Presenter: Charles Plishka, DPT, PT

Charles is a graduate of Creighton University in Omaha, NE, and is a licensed Physical Therapist and owner of Posture & Balance Concepts, LLC. He has over 14 years experience evaluating and treating these special patient populations. Charles is currently a clinician at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge, LA. Dr. Plishka has served on the Board of Directors for the Vestibular Disorder Association, which is a national nonprofit organization designed to provide information to the public on subjects and conditions related to dizziness and balance disorders. He is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association, and the Movement Disorder Society
