Course Description:

This course is designed for therapists who intend to perform differential  diagnosis, examination and treatment intervention management of people with various diagnoses of neurological dysfunctions such as brain injury, brain tumors, stroke, spinal cord injury, Parkinson’s disease, Guillain-Barre syndrome,  Post-Polio Syndrome, infectious disease, Cerebellar diseases and Peripheral nerve injury. Current-evidence practice will be explored and discussed to transition into a practical and useable format through lecture, problem solving and case study and video experiences and interactive discussions

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion the participant will be able to demonstrate and have an understanding of:

Review basic neuroanatomy and neurophysiology

Identify neuromusculoskeletal challenges that contribute to balance and gait in adults
with neurological dysfunction

Determine the essential components of a neurological examination using evidence
based tools with a focus on function, especially improvement in balance and
locomotion

Design and implement a management program to improve underlying neurological
defects in adults

Expand current knowledge of evidence-based research in the neurological efficacy
with a focus functional management

Presenter: Ann Newstead, PT, PhD, NCS, GCS

Dr. Newstead is a graduate of  State University College at Potsdam, New York with BA degree in biology/chemistry (1976), University of Alabama with MS  and PT degree (1978) and University of Texas with PhD degree in Kinesiology/Movement Science (2010).
She worked in rehabilitation inpatient, outpatient and home health settings (1978-present).  She has worked in faculty positions at the University of Texas Medical Branch Galveston (1992-1996): The University of Texas  Health Science Center San Antonio (1997-2010): University of Incarnate Word San Antonio (2010-2012) and West Coast University (2012-2016).
Dr. Newstead has her own clinic AHNew Physical Therapy and Wellness in Helotes, Texas (2017-present).
Ann received her Geriatric  Clinical Specialization (2005-2025); Neurological Clinical Specialization (1994-2025); Vestibular Rehabilitation Certification (2008) and  Certified Exercise Expert in Aging Adults (2011).
She has published research in the area of balance, older adults, yoga, oncology, and brain injury.
Dr. Newstead is an active member of the American and Texas Physical  Therapy Association (Practice Committee) and IPT-HOPE of  World Physiotherapy (Secretary).
