COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course focus on a comprehensive problem solving approach to diagnosing and treating dizziness and balance disorders. It provides a review of functional anatomy and physiology of the balance systems with a closer look at identifying peripheral and central pathway pathologies. The course also places an emphasis on utilization of subjective and objective findings to formulate a working diagnosis and the most appropriate intervention, including identification of further evaluation and / or returning to the referring physician. The material is presented in a manner to support evidence-based medicine and introduce basic concepts of statistical analysis in the diagnostic process. The participant will also be introduced to a variety of diagnoses (both central and peripheral), including recommended medical and therapy interventions for optimal outcomes. The course format will be lecture and demonstration on live patient as well as a variety of case presentations to integrate comprehensive clinical approach.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

At completion of this program, the participants will be able to:

Quickly and effectively determine the appropriate patient in order to treat as specifically as possible or to recognize the need for a referral and/or return to physician
Perform a comprehensive history, systems review and tests and measures to formulate an accurate working diagnosis
Differentiate areas of symptoms by quality and behavior as well as implement a comprehensive diagnostic process through pattern recognition, hypothesis generation, logical reasoning and the basic understanding of statistical analysis
Identify appropriate functional goals using both subjective and objective indicators and determine appropriate prognosis and plan of care according to identified diagnosis, including when further testing is warranted

PRESENTER: Bridgett Wallace, PT, DPT

Bridgett Wallace has a doctorate of physical therapy and holds a competency-based certification in vestibular rehabilitation. She has been treating patients with dizziness and balance disorders for more than thirteen years and is founder and President of Balance Therapy of Texas (dba 360 Balance) a specialty clinic for the evaluation and treatment of dizziness and balance disorders that includes both audiology and therapy services. Dr. Wallace’s work encompasses a wide variety of patient populations ranging from pediatrics to geriatrics, from multi-factorial balance problems to collegiate athletes, and inner-ear disorders to neurological disorders. She continues to consult locally and nationally on the development of balance centers and medical management of vestibular disorders, including return-to-play protocols for post-concussion athletes. Dr. Wallace has been instrumental in the development of hardware and software designed to integrate diagnostic findings for vestibular patients.
