COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course will discuss pediatric and adolescent sports injuries of the upper and lower extremities as well as the spine. It will encompass etiology, evaluation and management of various injuries as well as return to sport parameters and programs. It is designed to help the therapist better recognize those issues pertinent to pediatric orthopedics and sports and feel more comfortable treating this patient populations.

Common foot and ankle injuries, treatment and foot and ankle demonstrations
Common knee injuries, treatment and demonstrations
Common hip injuries, treatment and demonstrations
Common shoulder, elbow and wrist injuries, treatment and demonstrations
Common spine injuries, treatment and demonstrations
Anterior cruciate ligament tears in the female athlete
Strength training, sports specific training, pre-pubescent athlete and concussions

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion the participant will be able to demonstrate and have an understanding of:
Describe general injury trends in the pediatric and adolescent athlete population
Understand the differences in anatomy and physiology as it relates to pre-pubescent and adolescent patients versus adults
Have a general understanding of the growth plate and its relation to the treatment of young athletes
Describe common injuries and conditions seen in the young athletic population and their treatments
Understand the advantages and disadvantages of strength training in the pre-pubescent population
Be able to explain to patients the etiology and prognosis for common pediatric sports injuries, as well as make recommendations for injury prevention

PRESENTER: Kevin McHorse, PT, SCS, Cert. MDT

Kevin has been practicing orthopedic and sports physical therapy since 1999 and has specialized in pediatric orthopedics and sports injuries since 2002 . Kevin is a Sports Certified Specialist through the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties and is certified in Mechanical Diagnosis and Treatment of the spine through the McKenzie Institute of North America. Kevin has lectured nationally onthe topic of pediatric orthopedics and sports injuries and is involved in injury prevention programs with many youth sports teams in the Austin, Texas area. Kevin practices at Central Texas Pediatric Orthopedics in Austin, Texas. Kevin’s practice is limited to pediatric and adolescent orthopedic and sports injuries with a special interest in injury prevention in preadolescent athlete.
