Course Description:

This two day course will provide therapists with a review of anatomy and biomechanical principles of the hand and upper extremity, reliable assessment techniques and knowledge of general protocols for treatment of common hand and upper extremity conditions. In addition, basic splinting techniques will be covered with a demonstration of the fabrication of splints commonly used with these conditions.

Learning Objectives:

Demonstrate a working knowledge of kinesiological and biomechanical principles as they apply to normal movement of the upper extremity and their relationship to musculoskeletal disorders
Explain the osteology, arthrology and myology of the shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand, as they apply to kinematics of these joints
Appropriately evaluate conditions of the upper extremity, including Colle’s fractures, flexor tendon repairs, CMC, OA, cumulative trauma disorders and Complex Regional Pain Syndrome
Plan and implement appropriate treatment protocols for these specific diagnoses
Identify appropriate splint designs used for these conditions

Presenter: Kimatha Grice, OTR, OTD, CHT, MOT

Kimatha Grice has a Bachelor of Science degree in Community Health from Texas A & M University and a Master’s degree in Occupational Therapy from Texas Woman’s University. She ahs been an occupational therapist for twenty-seven years with clinical experience in various areas and settings; primarily in the treatment of hands and upper extremity disorders. She has been certified as a Hand Therapist since 1991. She has diverse experience in physical dysfunction, including having worked on a burn unity, started and managed several hand practices and served as a Technical Service Representative for Smith & Nephew Rolyan, presenting in serives and splinting workshops for therapists in Texas, Okalhoma, Arkansas and Louisiana. She presents frequently at workshops and conferences on splinting, biomechanics, ergonomics and upper extremity rehabilitation. She has numerous publications in peer review journals. Kimatha is currently Associate Professor in the Department of Occupational Therapy at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Texas.
