Course Description:
Biophysical agents have come under increased scrutiny in the past few year yet they have remained a mainstay in academic programs of the rehab sciences and they continue to be widely used in clinical environments. This 2-day course will address the current best evidence, indications, and administration of commonly used biophysical agents to include electrotherapy for muscle activation and pain modulation, therapeutic ultrasound, shortwave diathermy, low level laser therapy, iontophoresis, and extracorporeal shockwave therapy
Schedule or Agenda
The Role and Place of Biophysical Agents
Activation of skeletal muscle: NMES and FES
Activation of skeletal muscle: NMES and FES (con’t)
Clinical application of NMES/FES

Learning Objectives:
Upon completion the participant will be able to demonstrate and have an understanding of
The attendee will be able to describe the current best evidence and indications for the use of therapeutic electrical currents for activating skeletal muscle.
The attendee will be able to appropriately instrument a patient and select proper parameters for muscle actuation.
At the conclusion of this course, the attendant will be able to describe the current and best evidence for the use of therapeutic electrical currents for pain modulation and identify patients for whom pharmacologic cross-tolerance may be present.
At the conclusion of this course, the attendant will be able to identify, describe, and establish appropriate dosage for NMES/FES with proper clinical administration.
At the conclusion of this course, the attendant will be able to appropriately apply transcutaneous electrical stimulation for pain modulation which best reflects current evidence.
The attendee will be able to describe and differentiate the biophysical properties and current best evidence for clinical administration of therapeutic ultrasound, short wave diathermy, low level laser therapy, and extracorporeal shockwave therapy.
At the conclusion of this course, the attendant will be able to describe appropriate documentation for administration of biophysical agents.
At the conclusion of this course, the attendant will be able to identify and describe appropriate outcome measures used to assess the efficacy of administered biophysical agents.
Presenter: James Bellew, PT, EdD
Dr. Jim Bellew is a Professor in the Krannert School of Physical Therapy at the University of Indianapolis. He received his entry-level Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Therapy from Marquette University and later earned a Master of Science Degree in Orthopedics and Doctor of Education in Exercise Physiology both from the University of Kentucky. Dr. Bellew has published more than 75 peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts, abstracts, and chapters in the areas of electrotherapy, exercise training, and muscle physiology and is the lead author of the textbook Modalities for Therapeutic Intervention, now in its 6th edition. Dr. Bellew is a regular speaker at the APTA’s Combined Sections Meetings and is routinely sought nationally and internationally for consultation regarding electotherapeutic agents. In 2012, he was named conference president for an international conference on biophysical agents in Brazil.
