Course Description:

Patients with cardiopulmonary disease often present a special challenge to therapists.  Frequently diagnoses are complex necessitating a cautious approach to both treatment and exercise progression. This two-day course is designed to address many of these complexities while providing a review and update of contemporary therapy strategies.  Course content includes both lecture and laboratory components to enhance the learning process.  Topics build upon one another beginning with a review of cardiopulmonary structure/function and ending with specific exercise strategies.  By the end of this course, therapists will have therapeutic tools they can immediately apply in their practice settings.

At completion of this program, the participants will be able to:

Describe the key features of heart and lung structure and function;
Recognize the essential aspects of the body’s immediate and chronic response to exercise stimulus
Understand basic laboratory data with regard to normal ranges
Contrast similarities and differences between various cardiac and pulmonary diagnoses
Articulate the mechanisms leading to uncompensated congestive heart failure
Appreciate the various complications often associated with coronary artery bypass graft and heart valve surgery;
Develop and modify exercise prescriptions for patients with post myocardial infarction and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease diagnoses
Demonstrate either new or enhanced skills in chest auscultation, basic electrocardiography, and exercise methods
