Course Description:

This course will cover several terms including, soft tissue mobilization, friction massage, myofascial, and flossing that have been used under the umbrella of myofascial release. The lecture portion of this course will cover both histology and common musculoskeletal pathologies and how these abnormalities of the myofascial system are affected including the peripheral nervous system. The presenter will also offer anatomical and physiological reasoning supporting various soft tissue techniques. The majority of this class will focus on lab education and practice for multiple techniques designed to improve mobility and decrease pain in a variety of patients presenting with acute, chronic, or post-op impairments. These techniques include myofascial release, positional release, and nerve flossing.

Indentify possible causes of restrictions in the myofascial and peripheral nervous system.
Demonstrate understanding of the primary goals of various soft tissue techniques including myofascial release, positional release, and nerve flossing
.Demonstrate proficiency in the application of various soft tissue techniques including myofascial release, positional release, and nerve flossing.
Discuss the various myofascial systems of the human body and how each is influenced by injury and intervention.
Contrast the various labels that are used to describe various soft tissue techniques including myofascial release, positional release, and nerve flossing.
Distinguish the phases of soft tissue healing so as to employ safe and appropriate soft tissue manipulation techniques for a variety of patients with musculoskeletal impairments commonly seen in physical therapy settings.

Presenter: Jacob Thorp, PT, DHS, MTC

Jacob Thorp, PT, DHS, MTC received his Master of Science degree in Physical Therapy from Des Moines University, Osteopathic Medical Center in 2001. He also received his Doctor of Health Science degree with emphasis on Orthopedic Physical Therapy from the University of Indianapolis. Jacob is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor at East Carolina University in the school of physical therapy. He is also adjunct DE instructor in the school of physical therapy at the University of St. Augustine. In 2005 he became a Certified Ergonomic Assessment Specialist, CEAS from the Back School of Atlanta. In 2006 he received his Manual Therapy Certification, MTC from the University of St. Augustine. Jacob is also a practicing physical therapist; he is currently a Physical Therapist, adjunct at the Brody School of Medicine and also Clinic Administrator and Physical Therapist East Carolina University Physical Therapy. Jacob is also involved in authoring book and chapters and he also has numerous research experience.
