PRESENTER: PAMELA SCARBOROUGH, PT, MS, CDE, CWS, FACCWS

Dr. Scarborough is currently the Director of Public Relations and Education for American Medical Technologies, headquartered in Irvine, California. Her clinical career spans over 30 years having practiced in a variety of settings including acute, out-patient, home health and long-term care. Her clinical experience has included traditional physical therapy, orthopedics and sports medicine, cardiac rehabilitation, and wound care. She considers herself a Physical Therapist Generalist with specialty interests in diabetes and wounds. Pamela has published book chapters, articles, and monographs on the topics of diabetes and wound care, in addition to frequently being invited to present at conferences and educational activities around the country on these and related subjects. She holds an active license as a Physical Therapist in the state of Texas and is certified by two nationally accredited boards, the National Certification Board of Diabetes Educators, where she has held the credential of Certified Diabetes Educator for the past 20 years…and the American Academy of Wound Management, where she has held the Certified Wound Specialist credential since the year 2000. She is on the Board of Directors for the Association for the Advancement of Wound Care and has served on numerous symposium planning panels and association boards over her extensive career.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This dynamic two-day course discusses wound prevention, identification, assessment and treatment. Included in the course content is information on acute and chronic wounds and the phases of wound healing. The attendees will learn how to differentiate between wounds of various etiologies and identify factors that contribute to abnormal healing. There will be lecture and discussion on diabetes in general and how diabetes impairs the wound healing processes. In addition, content will describe current evidence based and best practices for wound care including dressing categories and biophysical interventions. The course includes a skills lab where participants will review and perform lower extremity examinations on their lab partners. A significant portion of the skills lab will be spent on performing hand-held Doppler screening to assess blood flow to the lower extremities and feet and how instruction on how to interpret the Doppler results for designing a plan of care or for referral for higher level vascular studies and interpretation by the physician. The course will conclude with case studies that will be reviewed an interactive format
